Fresh Starts & Goal Setting

One of the most rewarding parts of education is the opportunity for a fresh start each year, full of possibilities. As summer winds down, we encourage families to talk with students about setting meaningful goals and the strategies needed to achieve them. This simple activity fosters motivation and connection, two powerful ingredients for success.

Attendance and Tardies

One of our top goals this year is to improve attendance and reduce tardiness.
School begins at 7:45 AM – students must be in their classrooms by this time, not just arriving on campus.

Consistent attendance is linked to better academic performance and long-term success. Of course, we understand that illness and emergencies arise. When absences are necessary, please notify us as early as possible so we can mark them as excused:

        Attendance Line: 812-330-7724 ext. 41283

If your student has an appointment, please call at least one hour in advance.

More information is coming on attendance as state law has put additional requirements on unexcused absences.

Building a Safe, Inclusive Community

At BHSN, we are committed to creating a positive, affirming environment where every student, family member, staff member, and visitor feels welcomed and respected. This begins with seeing one another as human beings and treating each other with dignity and care.

When expectations are missed, it’s important to speak up so we can address concerns and restore trust. At its core, this is about choosing kindness.

Let’s Stay Connected

Creating a great school year takes all of us. If you ever need support or clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out. In most cases, your student’s teacher is the best first point of contact. If you do not hear back within two school days, feel free to call me so I can follow up and ensure your needs are met.

As a guiding principle this year, I invite all of us to pause and ask three quick questions before we speak or act:
Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it kind?
If the answer to any is “no,” perhaps it doesn’t need to be said. Let’s build a school culture that uplifts, encourages, and supports.

This is such an important time in our students’ lives, and we want them to get the very most out of it. I hope you’ll join me in embracing the fresh energy of the new year and working together to make it meaningful, productive, and full of promise.

Looking forward to a great year ahead,

Matthew J. Stark
